White House Executive Order to Increase Competition in Digital Economy
WASHINGTON, July 9, 2021— This afternoon, President Biden signed an Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy. In response, HTTP’s Executive Director Alejandro Roark issued the following statement:
“With 53% of Hispanic children living in low-income families, broadband continues to be out of reach for many Latino households, and has become one of the defining civil rights issues of our time. Access to broadband is key to the Latino community’s health and long term economic well being and is a critical tool for 21 century success.
Today’s Executive Order on competition demonstrates President Biden’s commitment to making broadband accessible and affordable to everyone—regardless of zip code, race, or economic standing.
His executive order paired with the record investments being made by his administration as part of the American Rescue Plan, the American Jobs Plan, and his upcoming bipartisan infrastructure package gives local communities the tools to make digital equity and universal access a reality.
President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy sends a clear signal to the technology sector, the Federal Communications Commission, and the Federal Trade Commission that fairness, opportunity, and choice are central to his long term vision for the connected future of our country.
We look forward to working with the Biden administration, the FCC, the FTC and our technology companies to continue to promote an inclusive digital economy that makes equity and choice a defining feature of American innovation.”
